G & L Rep. Feb 2012

Several members attended the Dedication of the Memorial Garden at the Truro Cathedral on the 6th November and on the following Sunday, as is usual, because ofthe nature of our widespread membership, members attended their own localservices, although the Standard Bearer did attend the main Truro service.

Having been regular Donors to the Cornwall Children’s Hospice, ‘Little Harbour’ since its conception, the Branch was invited to attend a conducted tour of the now completed facility, shortly before the official opening in early December and it was with some misgivings that some twenty of us took up the offer. We were of course somewhat concerned as to what affect it would have on us, but we should not have been concerned as the whole operation is designed to present a happy atmosphere to the children. This has been more than achieved and Cornwall are lucky to have been guided by the experiences of the Devon and Bristol operations. The play rooms, the accommodation, both for patients and their families, and all other services have been set up to provide a very friendly, happy atmosphere and I am sure all of us were better for the experience. At the end of the tour our Treasurer Ron Doney took the opportunity to present the Hospice with a further cheque. Following the visit we retired for lunch at the Polgooth Inn, to finish off a most unusual morning.

It is normal practice not to hold a monthly meeting in December as the usual date falls so close to our Annual Luncheon which this year took place on the 11th December when some fifty or so members and guests attended the Green Lawns Hotel in Falmouth. Our principal guest this year was Brigadier Simon Hill who was accompanied by his wife Barbara. In response to a toast to the Corps and the Association, he brought us completely up to date with events, especially regarding the forthcoming changes at Central Office. We were also pleased to welcome James Humphries, who was not long returned from Afghanistan with 42 Cdo.

Latest Branch G & L Report

July/August Issue
At the AGM in April, there was only one change in the management when David Spence took over the reins of Chairman.  David has been a long standing member of the Branch for many years, but unable to be active due to working abroad.  We have to thank our retiring Chairman, Tom Salt who has served our cause for many years, but who felt that
now was the time to give way to new blood.
Our latest Charity Collection Day on the 17th March at the Asda Store in Penryn enabled us to add a further £500 to our totals.  Unfortunately we had been granted a Sunday, which meant that the actual collecting hours had to be foreshortened thereby affecting  the final result.
Our regular Pub Lunch programme continued in May at the usual venue, The Inn for All Seasons, which seems to be one of our more successful events, although due largely to last minute illness, our number was somewhat reduced on this occasion.   Nevertheless this did not detract from the enjoyment for those attending.   Hopefully the next lunch will be sometime in July.
There has been some concern expressed at recent meetings over reports of the large number of homeless sleeping on the streets of Truro of late, many whom are ex -servicemen. Although there are a number of Agencies addressing this problem, it was thought we ourselves should be more aware of what is happening although we may not be fully equipped to help in a positive way.  A representative of SSAFA, Barry Wilkinson, is attending our next meeting in July and will apprise us of the situation.
Meantime we have the Branch Annual BBQ to look forward to on Saturday 2nd July which is being held at the usual venue, Churchtown Farm, Gerrans. Hopefully the Cornish weather has now changed for the better, but we do have the facility of a large barn for insurance.

You use target indication to point out hot chicks   You use the term ‘chicks’   You insist on dancing like an idiot while your civvy mates insist on trying to dance ‘properly’    Your civvy mates don’t understand any of the terminology you use  such as ‘no dramas’ ‘squared away’ ‘take a knee’ ‘get the wets on’ etc……   You answer the phone with ‘send and cant help saying ‘roger’ ‘say again’ and other snappy bits of VP   You use acronyms thinking your civvy mates will understand what your talking about   You don’t have any civvy mates   You cringe and mutter under your breath ‘haircut’ when you see men with long hair   You walk at a ridiculous pace and are physically incapable of walking at the shopping pace of your girlfriend    You refer to personal organisation as ‘admin’    You naturally get into step when walking with anyone then publicly slag yourself off whilst spending the rest of the journey conciously trying not to do it again   Your girlfriend is stored into your mobile phone address book as ‘Zero Alpha’    You use patrol hand signals in a night club if people can’t hear you   You always use the 24hr clock…….   You make out that your mega threaders with your civvy mates when they ask you to wear your lovets or blues to his/her wedding but secretly inside you know your going to love the attention and spend days getting your rig ready   Nothing Marines do shocks you any more….   You can’t watch war movies without a running commentary   You feel guilty about wearing jeans in front of senior officers in the mess   The sight of rolling countryside makes you scan for ‘enemy depth’   You think that eating every meal for a week with the same spoon that you licked clean and kept in the pocket of the same shirt you’ve worn all week is perfectly acceptable   You’d rather walk 4 miles out of your way around the outside of a camp rather than 10 metres across it if it meant passing an officer and having to salute him/her   All of your food has to be prepared by a chef because your incapable of cooking anything that can’t be boiled in a bag or eaten cold   You lie when people ask you what you do for a living   When you leave your phone number on a voice message you can’t just give it once, it has to be repeated   When surveying open ground (when not looking for indepth enemy positions) you imagine the best place to set up an OP. If a forestry block- the best route to get a section in   You survey open ground   When you are pointing out some natural feature you begin with ‘reference bushy topped tree etc..’   Your girlfriend has started saying ‘admin’ asking if you’d like ‘a wet’ and gave you the ‘chop’ when telling you to put the bin out    Your family knows when your threaders and what it means   When meeting mates in a pub you always turn up 5 minutes early and are secretly angry that nobody else has….. Worse still if its a venue you haven’t been to before you turn up 15 minutes early to put in a CTR in order that you are definitely 5 minutes early   You subconsiously red-pen everything you read   You have ‘Life On The Ocean Wave’ as your mobile ring tone   You have the globe and laurel as your screen saver   It annoyed you that I didn’t put a capital G & L in the previous line   You have an all year round tan that runs from your hands to mid-arms and makes a nice V on your chest

ANNUAL BBQ

Once again another lovely day for the BBQ – seems we always pick a good one.  Scran was up to its usual standard, thanks to our regular chef and victualler, Ron Doney.  It was very pleasing to welcome ten guests from the RNA, St.Austell Branch and we hoped they enjoyed themselves, they should have done as they walked away with three raffle prizes, but still enough for the rest of us.

Our thanks must also go to Martin and Pat Raven for inviting us to Churchtown Farm and providing the usual facilities
